Abstract:
The watching brief recorded a series of regularly spaced, parallel trenches, which were thought to be 'claying trenches', used for obtaining clay for mixing with the once peaty topsoil. These trenches were probably the features previously described as 'drainage furrows' by an evaluation in 1990. A tree bole, a possible former field boundary, and at least two phases of land drains were also recorded. [Au]
