Abstract: |
The assessment established that the site lay beyond the limits of the medieval borough and outside any earlier putative defended enclosure. It was concluded that the property was built up by the 18th century, although the history of the medieval development of the quay area remained unknown. It was possible that the 'lofty pile cellars' evolved from medieval warehouses, the foundations of which might have survived as buried remains. It was also possible that an earlier quay underlay the frontage of the South Place buildings and if this were the case, the buildings would have stood directly on the waterfront. [Au(abr)] |
