Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out in advance of the proposed rebuilding and conversion of the church of St. Ethlburga Bishopgate, which was badly damaged by a terrorist bomb in April 1993, to a Centre for Reconciliation and Peace. Documentary sources suggested that the present church building and its belfry dated from a documented period of building in 1387-1446, with minor modifications later, while archaeological evidence suggested that a stone church may have been in existence in the 12th century. A series of modifications and repairs occured throughout the church's history including the erection of small shops flanking the porch in 1570 and 1613, the building of a spire (prior to 1736), the erecting of a clock, changes to the gables, the replacing of the spire with a small cuploa (c.1775) and the replacement of the nave roof in 1835. More recent changes included the insertion of a rood screen across the nave and ailse and parclose between the sanctuary and ailse, pews, stone floor and the insertion of a new west gallery (1912-14). Little was known, however, of the history of any digging of vaults within the church and whether they were cleared of burials during the later 19th century or the use of the small churchyard to the east for tombs or vaults. The report outlined the potential for reuse of the church fabric material (timber, stone etc), retrieved following the bomb, the impact on archaeological deposits and fragments during rebuilding and outlines a mitigation strategy for future restoration.
