Abstract:
The site was proposed for redevelopment comprising of a warehouse and office facility with extensive surface parking and landscaping. Advice from English Heritage had indicated that the study area had a good archaeological potential in that the marshland on the southern bank of the Thames had often produced prehistoric remains, particularly in the form of wooden trackways and finds, especially flint artefacts. The assessment report found that any Mesolithic palaeo-landsurfaces present on the study site would now be deeply buried under a deep sequence of peat and alluvial clay. During the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and early Roman periods the study site lay in marginal marshland which could have been exploited as summer pasture for wildfowling and for the harvesting of reeds and sedges. During the Neolithic and Bronze Age the marshland may also have been used for ritual purposes. From the mid Roman period until the 12th century the site would have been subject to flooding and for long periods of time may have lain under water. From the 12th century until the 20th century the site comprised marshland pasture. River walls (earthen banks) and drains spanning these periods may have been present. The proposed development would be built on piles which would impact on the whole stratigraphic sequence, though across less than 1% of the site area. The development proposals included an underground attenuation tank which could potentially impact on archaeological deposits spanning the Neolithic to 12th century. In view of the archaeological impact of the proposed development a suite of archaeological mitigation measures would need to be implemented. [Au(adp)]
