Abstract:
A second phase of archaeological evaluation was undertaken in summer 2000 by the Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit using students from the Department of Art History and Archaeology (University of Manchester). A survey plan was made of the extent of the remains of a farmstead site, which included wall fragments and earthworks. Two areas were examined through excavated trenches. Trench 2 from last year's evaluation was extended to better define the possible building platform. Post holes and part of a stone wall were revealed but the surprising depth of rubble deposits did not allow the trench to be fully excavated in the short time available. It was possible that the features represented the remains of a barn, with the field name 'Narn Flatte' being referred to in a deed of 1607. A 10m long trench was excavated across the core of the farm site. Two main structures were encountered and these may both have been farmhouses, as the farmstead was split into two from the early 17th century. A number of well preserved features were recorded including walls, post holes, door thresholds, a drain and a cobbled passageway separating the two buildings. The earliest finds were of 18th century date. [Au(abr)]
