Abstract: |
The assessment identified no areas of prehistoric activity from the proximity of the proposed development. Romano-British activity was best represented by the Foss Way, however, there was no strong evidence for Romano-British activity on the site. Siegeworks relating to the Civil War encircled Newark and the line of these works probably crossed the northern part of the development area. The earliest maps dating from the Civil War indicated that the investigation area was close to a fort that commanded passage along the Foss Way. Aerial photographic evidence suggested that the fort was located on the eastern corner of the site. Present ground conditions suggested the likelihood of fair preservation of any archaeological remains. [AIP] |
