Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken following proposals for a series of works to improve flood defences along the River Pont. This work indicated that Ponteland has a long history of settlement which, though it can be substantiated from the Norman period onwards, probably extends back to the prehistoric period. The town was a major crossing point of the River Pont from the Roman period, and supported more than one manor and a number of mills. [Au(abr)] |
