Abstract: |
A total of five trenches measuring 20.00 m by 1.80 m were excavated across the site to reveal the underlying natural sand between 21.77 m OD (north end of Trench 3) and 20.44 m OD (northeast end of Trench 1). A further 10 test pits excavated in order to investigate the palaeoarchaeological potential of the site. The earliest identifiable activity on the site comprised 19th century pitting that was interpreted as small scale quarrying of the underlying natural sand. These features were sealed by a thick layer of 19th or 20th century made ground, presumably in advance of the construction of the factory buildings that stood on the site until their recent demolition.
