Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken in support of a planning application for the proposed extension of mineral working. A number of nearby prehistoric and medieval archaeological sites demonstrated that the general area was utilised in these periods. A substantial earthen bank enclosed the entire plantation. At the northern end of the north-west boundary a slight external ditch and two banks were present, the outer lower one quickly disappearing to the south-west. Towards the northern end of the north-eastern boundary a shallow internal ditch was visible. There was no indication of the present line of the present parish boundary cutting across the western corner of the site. The proposed mining/quarrying would have had a direct impact on the enclosing bank and the possible gully. The date and significance of these features was not known. [Au(adp)] |
