Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation and watching brief was undertaken during the insertion of a drain through the church and churchyard of St. Mary's Ketton. The archaeological investigations monitored all the groundworks associated with the development. The archaeological investigation was undertaken as the church was late 12th century in date and archaeological deposits of this period may have been affected by the works. Saxon stonework had also been recovered from the church and the mention of a priest in the Domesday Survey may have indicated a Saxon precursor to St. Mary's church. The investigations identified the former ground surface, an undated grave and a stone culvert. Deposits of made ground were also encountered and, along with a brick culvert, these may have related to restoration work undertaken at the church in the mid 19th century. Artefacts recovered from the investigation included late Saxon, medieval and later pottery as well as a clay pipe fragment and a small quantity of metalwork from coffin fittings. [Au(abr)] |
