Abstract: |
A survey of the north and east walls of a former cloister at Polesworth Abbey was carried out as a preliminary to the development of a restoration programme. One wall lay along the edge of a Scheduled Ancient Monument, Warwickshire No. 119. The abbey was founded in the 9th or 10th century, and was instrumental in the development of medieval Polesworth; its church and claustral buildings were demolished following the Dissolution in 1539. Observation of the surviving structure revealed approximately sixteen phases in the masonry, dating from the 12th to the 20th centuries. Much of the remaining material was of post-medieval date. It was concluded that the most important surviving features were two medieval doorways. Recording of loose architectural fragments and archaeological monitoring of any ground disturbance during restoration work were recommended. [AIP] |
