Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks associated with the construction of a two storey block of flats. The site was archaeologically sensitive, lying in the historic core of the medieval town. Northgate was recorded as le Northgate as early as 1501AD. The work identified a wide, shallow pit-like feature and two other probable ditches dateable to the Saxo-Norman period. Also uncovered was a feature of uncertain function from the post-medieval period and a modern drain. [Au(adp)] |
