Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks for residential development. Towards the south-eastern corner of the site the footings for a block of flats revealed a considerable depth of chalky soil containing numerous pieces of rolled flint and small chalk pellets. The nature and full extent of this deposit could not be determined, but it seemed likely to be a positive lynchet following the hill-slope contour along the southern site boundary. The foundation trench for a small block of flats revealed a brick-built cellar which clearly had been part of the detached house (No. 12 London Road). Aside from these limited findings, no artefacts or features of archaeological significance were encountered during the course of the watching brief. [Au(adp)] |
