Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological investigation comprising geophysical survey, fieldwalking and trial excavation was undertaken in advance of the derision of several overhead power lines necessitated by groundworks for the A1/M62 road improvements. The majority of the anomalies detected were probably caused by modern activity but evidence for ridge and furrow ploughing was noted at three of the sites and possible archaeological features were identified at a further two of the sites. At site FM2, the presence of an archaeological enclosure previously identified as a cropmark, was confirmed. Discrete anomalies indicative of features within the enclosure were subsequently confirmed when excavation revealed four post holes and a pit. Pottery recovered from these features has been dated to between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD. No finds other than of post-medieval or modern provenance were recovered during the fieldwalking.
