Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out along the line of the new Severn Trent water main, laid out along the north side of Station Road. Beneath layers of modern tarmac and hard core, a number of features were noted. A layer of cobbles was identified opposite East Leake Hall; the edge of a cinder pathway alongside the churchyard and a brick sided, stone covered drain. More interesting was a stony layer within a sandy clay matrix, containing fragments of tile, that was found to consistently overlie geological deposits. This may have been the remains of an undated, roughly cobbled road. [Au] |
