Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of engineering test pits prior to the construction of residential dwellings. A previous evaluation of the site had demonstrated that well preserved medieval and post-medieval structures and deposits lay close to the modern surface of St Andrewgate and Spen Lane street frontages. The archaeological evidence from the test pits suggested that the area had been used for dumping, certainly in modern times, and probably in the post-medieval period as well, although no dating evidence was revealed. Other test pits revealed limestone blocks in the foundations of a modern wall which may have indicated substantial medieval/post-medieval buildings close by. [AIP] |
