The site lay within the Durham city Conservation Area and a total of 21 Grade II Listed Buildings were located on the south side of Gilesgate, 100m to the south of the site. Within the site itself, the former County Penitentiary building was not Listed but was considered to be of local historical interest. [Au(abr)]
