Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during topsoil stripping for mineral extraction. Four palaeochannels were observed. From the north these comprised Channel L, the westward continuation of the Egginton Brook prior to it being canalised in the late 19th or early 20th century, visible on the 1955 OS sheet SK22 NE. In the north-east the base of a small brick-built footbridge, 4m long by 1.5m wide was exposed. Areas of gravel make-up were recorded on north and south sides of the bridge. A section excavated through the infilled channel below the bridge revealed a brick-lined culvert. A fragment of fountain pen bearing the inscription ''The Wyvern' No9.B. Wyvern Pen Co. Leicester', dating from between 1946-1950, was recovered from the fill. The bridge appeared on the 1955 sheet, but not on the 1879 Sheet. Channel Q ran west-east across the area and was recorded over 111m. The aerial photograph suggested that in the east, just beyond the edge of the development area, this channel turned abruptly to the south, and may in fact have been the same as the channel recorded to the south, Channel O. Channel Q was trenched in two places. In both places the profile was shallow and gradual, and filled with inorganic silty sands. Evidence of flood rejuvenation in the form of clean gravel fills was recorded in the section against the eastern baulk. Channel O was recorded over 86m. It was similarly shallow to Channel Q and contained a similar fill, which was also truncated by a rejuvenation event. In the south, Channel O and Channel P to the west converged. A trench to test the relationship between these channels showed them both to be relatively shallow. The relationship was not proved, although there was a slight indication that Channel P cut Channel O. Channel P was a wide curving channel. In trench 51, the full profile was relatively deep at 1.5m. This channel was filled with pinkish red sands and gravels typical of Devensian period deposits. The channel also showed signs of rejuvenation. Burnt clay horizons, interpreted as the results of prehistoric woodland clearance of the floodplain, continued to be found. Five timbers were recovered, all interpreted as loose and not part of any structures. The most interpretable were T91 - an oak stake that showed some signs of tooling, and T94, the discarded butt of a felled tree. A complete axe blade signature was recorded on T7, whilst a 90mm minimum was recorded on T94. Both pieces looked to be retrieved from the same source. [Au(adp)] |
