Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a medieval moated site was undertaken in advance of the possible submission of a planning application. A Bronze Age metalwork hoard, Roman artefacts and four findspots of prehistoric pottery had been recorded in the surrounding area, and the possible route of a Roman road passed nearby. An excavation in the vicinity, probably on the moated platform itself, had taken place immediately after demolition of a Tudor house at the site in 1962. This had revealed Roman coins and Samian ware. The earliest possible reference to the site was in the Domesday Book, although the first certain reference dated from 1232. It was noted that the centre of prehistoric activity in the area appeared to have lain some distance away, and that the findspots recorded in the vicinity of Berne Hall did not necessarily indicate the presence of buried archaeological remains. Prehistoric evidence was therefore unlikely to be affected by any development. However, it was concluded that Roman remains could potentially be affected, and that evidence of structures relating to the moated site itself could have survived. [AIP] |
