Abstract:
The desk-based assessment reviewed the available archaeological and topographic evidence and concluded that although an isolated handaxe or prehistoric worked flint artefact may occur on the site, the likelihood of this was low. Similarly, although the site lay close to Roman Londinium, it was beyond the walled settlement and distant from the various Roman Roads approaching the city from the west. However, although Roman cemeteries were recorded in the Holborn area and along Fleet Street, the distribution of burials and cremations suggested that the study site lay beyond these cemeteries. The site was therefore accorded a low potential, although it was recognised that Brickearth and gravel extraction may have occurred there or that the site may have fallen within an area of Roman fields. Saxon evidence was not anticipated on the site since it lay some distance north-east of the known extent of Lundenwic. Similarly, early medieval settlement was not anticipated since cartographic and archaeological evidence suggested that this area did not become built up until the 13th or 14th century and even then buildings occupied the road frontages with areas of small fields, gardens and allotments to the rear. As a result, the archaeological potential of the site focussed on the medieval and post-medieval periods, with deposits (pits, wells and other features cut into the Brickearth and gravel) evidencing the increasing density of settlement from the 13th and 14th century onwards. However, basemented buildings constructed on the site in the 1880s and 1960s would have caused truncation and destruction to archaeological deposits across extensive parts of the site. It was suggested that truncated archaeological deposits may have survived beneath the basement slab of Arnold House, part of Rolls House and No 8 Bream's Buildings, although even here truncation would have occurred and may have destroyed all but the deepest cut features.
