Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of two new paths within the grounds of Warwick Castle, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Caesar's Tower dated from the mid-14th century, and probably lay on the site of an earlier corner bastion. During the evaluation, it was found that the contours of the originally medieval ditch to the north-east of the tower seemed to date largely to the late 1760s, when landscaping work was known to have been carried out. 18th century drains and an early 19th century path were observed. Post-medieval artefacts found included pottery, roof tile, brick, clay pipe, vessel glass and a bone knife handle. 13th-15th century pottery was also recovered. [AIP] |
