Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development which lay close to the site of an important Romano-British settlement which was a SAM, and was transected by the River Yeo, which appeared to have been canalised in this area. The site of a Saxon Royal Palace, also a SAM, lay 100m to the north. Geophysical survey of the proposal site had identified a number of anomalies, which were interpreted as possible Roman stone-lined drainage ditches or walls associated with the canalisation of the river. Possible pits and ditches were also identified. Evaluation trenches sited to investigate the anomalies revealed modern field drains, a modern sewerage pipe and geological variations. A palaeochannel was also excavated, whilst a linear feature was found to contain probable prehistoric pottery, of possible Early Bronze Age date. This feature was interpreted in the field as a modern drainage ditch, but it could ave been of a prehistoric date. [Au(abr)] |
