Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed residential development site identified that a small pit containing Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age pottery, and a Late Iron Age enclosure with a possible field system, where Romano-British pottery had also been found, had been recorded in the vicinity. A Roman road passed 100m to the south-east, and a nearby church incorporated large quantities of Roman roof tile. A mill was known to have lain within the parish since at least 1086, although its actual site was disputed. Cartographic evidence indicated that a mill had lain on the proposal site since at least 1724, whilst a deed of 1659 denoting the site as a Burnt Mill also recorded an adjacent windmill. An assessment of previous land-use indicated that c. 50% of the proposal site had been affected by 19th and 20th century development. It was concluded that the site had a moderate potential for remains of Iron Age, medieval and post-medieval date, and a high potential for Roman remains. It was recommended that a field evaluation should be carried out. [AIP] |
