Abstract: |
A desktop assessment was carried out within five proposed extraction areas adjacent to Whitwell Quarry. The assessment revealed five areas of archaeological significance within the threatened zone. A prehistoric lithic scatter and two possible later prehistoric barrows; a long mound, possibly indicating a Neolithic funerary long cairn; a group of up to six round mounds and an elongated mound possibly indicating a major Neolithic or Bronze Age funerary complex; the course of a leat stream associated with the mine at Belph; and cropmarks possibly indicating a later prehistoric and/or Romano-British settlement focus.
