Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development which lay 100m to the north-east of Devizes Castle, and was situated within the outer bailey. An 18th century engraving showed a large rampart which may have lain close to the site. During the evaluation, deposits of made ground and large pieces of chalk were encountered. Medieval pottery was found immediately above the chalk, and post-medieval pottery was also recovered. It was considered likely that the deposits found had resulted from the destruction of or were the truncated remains of the rampart shown in the engraving. [AIP] |
