Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment and evaluation were carried out in advance of a proposed single dwelling construction. The desk-based assessment revealed evidence for extensive Saxon-medieval remains in the general vicinity of the study area. Lying in Fenland, attempts were made to reclaim land in Ely from the 13th century. The evaluation revealed few finds and only one archaeological feature, a ditch thought to have represented an 18th/19th century plot boundary. Alluvial and peat deposits were present in the lower part of the stratigraphic sequence. Above these were dumped layers, probably deposited to create a dry consolidated surface, the deposition of these layers began earlier (13th to 16th century), further away from the river. [Au(adp)] |
