Abstract: |
Controlled excavation of a water pipe trench was carried out where it passed through the rampart of Dundon Hillfort, an Iron Age monument. The water pipe was provided as part of a management plan designed to enhance the wildlife of the hill; the plan had been integrated with a strategy to protect and preserve the archaeological remains. During the excavation, the earliest dumped stone deposits at the base of the rampart were exposed. Burnt timbers, assumed to represent the framework supporting the stone rampart, were recorded, and samples of this material were recovered for radiocarbon dating purposes. A relatively thick clay deposit overlying the rubble stone was interpreted as a later phase of the defences. A spread of worn cobbles was sealed below the rear of the rampart, and was tentatively interpreted as a pre-hillfort feature. It was uncertain whether or not a defensive ditch had fronted the main rampart. [Au(adp)] |
