Abstract:
Archaeological recording and excavation was undertaken of four annealing ovens at Lemington High Glass Cone near Newburn in advance of works. The elevations and plans of the four annealing ovens attached to the west side of the glass cone were drawn. Two of the four annealing ovens were excavated by hand down to old floor levels. The red brick surviving superstructures of the ovens appeared to date from the 1850s. Excavation in Oven 3 revealed a rough sandstone floor and the original sandstone foundations of the glass cone. Excavation in Oven 1 revealed a firebrick floor contemporary with the firebrick walls in that oven. The firebrick lining and floor appeared to be a re-use of the oven for a higher temperature process, of which no evidence survived. No below-floor flues for heating the annealing ovens from the main furnace were found, suggesting that the annealing ovens had separate, individual heat sources. [Au]
