Abstract: |
A desk-based study of a site which lay adjacent to the M5 motorway was undertaken. A WWII anti-aircraft emplacement at the site had almost certainly been established in 1939; the first anti-aircraft rounds of the war to be fired against German aircraft were fired from it on June 26th, 1940. During a site visit, it was observed that concrete and brick buildings surrounded by timber buildings existed, in various states of disrepair. Several aspects of the site's layout appeared to diverge from available documentary classifications. The proposed development, an acoustic barrier up to 22m high, would preserve the key elements of the complex in situ, although demolition of standing buildings would probably occur. It was concluded that no further archaeological assessment would be required. [AIP] |
