Abstract:
A watching brief was maintined during works upon the fabric of a church. The monitoring concentrated on works to the south porch and the north transverse chapel, and trenching for drains. A summary of the background documentation emphasised the historical and architectural significance of the north transverse chapel and the domestic room above it, arguably provided for the priest who served a 13th century chantry. The domestic function of the first-floor room was attested by a fireplace and a vented garderobe, each with a cylindrical stack. Both the chapel and the domestic room above had been improved in the 14th century. The attribution of one of the flat buttresses on the north side of the chancel to the Early English period was supported by the recovery of sherds of 13th century pottery from a single vessel from its construction trench. A residual Norman potsherd, post-medieval roofing tiles and pottery, and shallow interred and re-interred human bones were also encountered during monitoring of excavation works. [Au(adp)]
