Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a trench for electricity services, crossing part of the bailey of English Bicknor Castle. Brick and slate fragments from a former school masters' house which had occupied part of the site were observed, and a layer containing sandstone blocks was recorded. This layer appeared to have been of natural origin, although it could possibly have been redeposited; it was thought not to have been incorporated into the bailey bank. The foundation of a wall forming the southern boundary of a churchyard was seen to continue westwards under the school playground, indicating that the churchyard may have been reduced in size when the school was opened.
