Abstract:
The available archaeological, historical and cartographic evidence suggested that there was a settlement at Wimbledon, certainly from the late Saxon period. There was no evidence to suggest where the settlement was located, but it may well have been around the area of the present church. This was based on the assumption that the Saxon church was in the area of the present church. Wimbledon was something of a backwater through most of the medieval period, being away from the main highways between London and the surrounding towns. Nevertheless the settlement grew in the medieval period until it was quite a sizeable settling in the late medieval/early Tudor period. From the Elizabethan period, Wimbledon became a popular village for gentlemen and merchants away from, but close to, London. There were records for an inn in Wimbledon since the late medieval period and, as the Dog and Fox was the oldest public house, it was identified with this inn. It was certainly there from the early 17th century. The development area probably lay over the out buildings of the Dog and Fox and there were reasonable prospects for the survival of finds and features dating from the 16th century, if not earlier.
