Abstract: |
The site was proposed for redevelopment: Area A, conversion of the historic mill complex into a museum dedicated to the history of papermaking; Area B, creation of a surface car park; Area C, new housing. The archaeological potential of area A of the study site was defined as high for the post-medieval period. This part of the site contained the existing 19th and 20th century historic Frogmore Mill complex and most probably contained the site of the 17th and 18th century mill complex. Area B of the study site was thought to have had a low archaeological potential for the post-medieval periods containing only Filter Beds built c.1890. Area C of the study site was thought to have had a moderate to good archaeological potential for the post-medieval period. This part of the site contained a standing mill fire station building and the sites of mill workers cottages. Past post-depositional archaeological impacts on pre-19th century remains in area A could probably be characterised as severe. No details were known of potential archaeological impacts. Past post depositional archaeological impacts in area B could probably be characterised as severe but localised. The proposed development, a surface car park, was unlikely to have any archaeological impact in this area. Past post depositional impacts in are C could probably be characterised as severe but localised with some cumulative impacts. The proposed development could potentially have had a severe and widespread archaeological impact in this area. [Au(abr)] |
