Abstract: |
The desk-top assessment comprised a documentary/cartographic/aerial photograph search, as well as a walkover survey and magnetometer survey. The documentary searches identified evidence for Romano-British occupation illustrated by the presence of a small settlement to the east. Saxon activity was identified by the presence of two sunken floored buildings immediately adjacent to the site. A small amount of medieval activity in the immediate vicinity of the site was also identified. The earliest maps indicated that the site was open ground since at least 1828. Present ground conditions suggested fair preservation of any surviving archaeological deposits. The geophysical survey identified a number of anomalies that may have been archaeological in origin.
