Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during alterations to the West Courtyard at Durham Castle. No early features were seen in the material removed from the sub-floor of the former lavatories. A quantity of finds were collected; all but two of these were of post-medieval date. A fireplace was revealed in the eastern wall of the former lavatory. This appeared to date from the 18th century but had been relined in recent times. This feature was to remain open in the re-ordered room. The bases of two buttresses, supporting the west wall of the Great Hall, were also found. The northern of these was heavily underpinned with concrete in the 1930s. This block of recent material was also left in situ. [Au(abr)] |
