Abstract: |
Two evaluation trenches were excavated by a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless grading bucket. The well and pump mechanism exposed in trench 1 was of probable 19th-century date and may have been in use up to the construction of the workshops in the inter-war years. There was no evidence to suggest that it was constructed over an earlier well or was associated with any other archaeological features. To the west of the well natural ground level drops of c.1.6m and ground level in this area had been raised by a sequence of dumps of modern building debris in the 20th century. No archaeological features were exposed cut into the underlying in situ gravel. While it was demonstrated that the site did not contain widespread or substantial archaeological deposits there was potential for the survival of the bases of, truncated, isolated features such as pits or post holes across the site that may have been exposed by groundworks for the new development.
