Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment and a walkover survey were carried out at Sugar Brook, one of five brownfield sites for which a landscape survey was undertaken in order to provide an indication of areas of particular opportunity for woodland, shrub or hedgerow planting works. Historically, the study area had lain on the north-western fringe of the township of West Derby, with the Sugar Brook forming the boundary with the neighbouring township of Fazakerley. A stone bridge may have crossed the River Alt just beyond the north-eastern boundary of the study area in the 14th century. Cartographic evidence dating from the 1830s to the early 20th century indicated that the site had been farmland during this period. Field boundaries within the site had progressively been removed during the 19th-20th centuries, and aerial photographic evidence indicated that it had been occupied by allotments in the early 1960s.
