Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during residential development of the site. Despite a very thorough search of the foundations trenches only one area of intact stratigraphy was identified on the extreme north-east quarter of the site where a 'garden' soil was present. Elsewhere, the natural deposits on the site were overlain by modern concrete or had been truncated and were overlain by redeposited, disturbed layers. The only finds were of late 18th and 19th century date. No significant archaeological remains were identified on the site and it was concluded that the combination of terracing into the natural hill slope to form a level platform for previous buildings and construction of the former garage had destroyed the sites archaeological potential.
