Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief monitored works associated with the development of the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail. These involved the laying of a new bed of aggregate within the confines of the existing route to the north of Hadrian's Wall, adjacent to the steep scarp slopes of the whin sill outcrop. It had been intended that a series of drains should be put in where water was collecting in eroded areas. During the works, however, it was decided that such drains were not necessary. This decision was taken as a result of concern about cutting through the narrow strip of turf on the northern side of the scar, between this and the steep drop at the edge of the crags. It was thought that this may have encouraged erosion, which over time would have impinged on both the footpath and the Wall itself. Despite the fact that the constructed path lay adjacent to the north side of the degraded remains of Hadrian's Wall, no significant archaeological deposits were recorded during the watching brief, and no artefacts were recovered.
