Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for the repaving of a street which lay within a Local Area of Archaeological Importance, and was situated close to the town wall of medieval Southampton. Archaeological work in the surrounding area had revealed evidence of late Saxon occupation, as well as the remains of medieval buildings and parts of the town wall. During the watching brief, the medieval stone foundations of God's House/St. Julian's Chapel were revealed. Parts of the below-ground walls of the structures along the north and south sides of Winkle Street were also exposed. Some of these were of medieval or probable medieval date, others of uncertain or 19th century date. A stone wall and several surfaces of possible medieval date were exposed beneath the north part of the Winkle Street roadway. These may have been associated with the medieval tenements to the north, and/or with quaysides on a shoreline pre-dating the medieval town wall. Evidence for a rise in the level of the street, probably since the early 19th century, was also found. [Au(adp)]
