Abstract: |
A desk top study of a proposed development site was undertaken. An auger survey of the area had recorded an Iron Age/Romano-British soil horizon. A ditch containing occupation debris and pottery of the late 1st-3rd centuries had been observed within a trial pit, and aerial photographs had demonstrated the presence of medieval and post-medieval ridge and furrow. The site also featured a 19th century farmhouse, an altered 17th century farmhouse and a dilapidated house with walls of a medieval character. An auger survey, trial trenching and a building inspection were recommended. An annexe to the original report, produced after a proposal for an extension to the development area, noted that a watercourse, a surviving feature of the early natural landscape, crossed this site, and that it also featured a stone bridge of some antiquity. It was recommended that the latter should be preserved. [AIP] |
