Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a cable trench at a site which lay within a Local Area of Archaeological Importance, and fell within the area of the middle Saxon settlement of Hamwic. A cemetery of this date, possibly associated with a church, had been excavated 100m to the south, and undated human bone had been recorded 200m to the south. To the south-east, an evaluation had revealed occupation evidence dating from the middle Saxon to the post-medieval periods. During the watching brief, no archaeologically significant remains were found. However, the natural subsoil was not exposed, so that archaeological deposits could potentially have survived below the level observed. [AIP] |
