Abstract: |
The archaeological and historical assessment of a proposed amenity lake involved the collection and assessment of information from historical, documentary and archaeological sources, as well as a site visit. There were no known archaeological sites of settlement type within the boundaries of the site, but an earlier evaluation revealed a sequence of well-defined peat deposits, with subsequent pollen analysis indicating that the earlier deposits may have dated to the Mesolithic period, a time of climatic change and local forest clearance. It was suggested that the site was unlikely to contain archaeological deposits normally associated with permanent settlement or prehistoric funerary activity. [AIP] |
