Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that only four prehistoric findspots had been recorded in the surrounding area. Artefacts found included a Mesolithic flint, undated flint flakes and Late Bronze Age pottery. Roman pottery had been found at one location, and the projected route of a Roman road passed within c. 100m of the site. A Roman building had been found nearby in the 19th century. No Saxon or medieval sites had been recorded in the area, and the proposal site itself appeared to have lain within undeveloped woodland until at least 1870. It was concluded that the survival of any archaeological deposits at the site was likely to have been severely compromised by tree growth and by the construction and demolition of St Davids School. A programme of archaeological fieldwork was not considered necessary. [AIP] |
