Abstract:
A geoarchaeological evaluation, consisting of the taking of 3 borehole samples, was undertaken prior to the proposed development of the site. The study showed that the boreholes drilled at the site penetrated a variety of sediment types including a basal coarse flint gravel and finer grained overlying sands, silts and clays. These deposits contained molluscan remains and plant macrofossil debris at certain locations. This evidence may have indicated that other fossil remains may exist within the sediments at the site (including forams, ostracods, pollen and diatoms). The evidence obtained from this study suggested that the gravels at the base of the sequence probably equated with the Kempton Park gravel of late Saalian or early Devensian age. The overlying finer grained sediments were either of last interglacial or early Devensian age. The coarser grained sediment units were only likely to contain reworked artefacts and floral/faunal material. The finer grained units within the overlying sequence may have contained artefacts and stratified biological material although if these deposits were ascribed to the last interglacial the likely presence of archaeological remains was reduced.
