Abstract: |
An area of 20 x 15 metres was excavated ahead of a housing development on the site of the medieval Hospital of St Nicholas. Successive building phases were identified, including remains of an 11th/12th century building overlain by the construction levels of a 12th century aisled hall, subsequently altered during the 13th and 14th century. A phase of rebuilding identified probably dated to the 14th century and was followed by the replacement of the hall in the 15th century with a brick building which subsequently fell into disrepair in the 16th century prior to the laying out of gardens during the 18th century.
