Abstract: |
Eleven trial trenches were excavated as part of an archaeological evaluation of the site, which revealed evidence of occupation on a gravel rise presently close to the Oundle Road known as Woodston Hill. Structural features identified in Area A were of indeterminate date. The remains could have potentially been of Anglo-Saxon date given the recovery of a Saxon inhumation c.200m to the east of Area A and north west which would have suggested that Area A lay within the grounds of the cemetery. Equally the scarcity of finds could have suggested the presence of agricultural buildings and associated activity of Iron Age date and these remains could have been part of the Iron Age settlement found 100m to the north of Area A during gravel extraction.
