Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to development. The site lay in an area of high archaeological potential, with a core of Neolithic activity to the south and south east, and peripheral features associated with Late Iron Age/ Roman land use to the north west. The site was situated to the north of a major Roman road that appeared to have served as a focus for burial. Finds of Roman pottery suggested nearby settlement, probably of a rural nature. At a distance of c.400m from the Pagan Saxon at Girton College, the site lay within the radius for associated settlement of the same period, as yet unlocated. By the medieval period the site appeared to have been in agricultural use, probably part of the field system provisioning the deserted medieval village to the south east of the site. At similar sites at West Fen Road Ely, Little Thetford, and at Vicar's Farm recently excavated on the west side of Cambridge, cropmarks and earthworks or ridge and furrow had been found to mask extensive and intensive earlier activity. Thus it could not be assumed that the site had a continuity of rural use, especially given its situation within a comparatively rich archaeological landscape. [Au(adp)]
