Abstract:
The report considered the archaeological potential of the site, and the likely impact on this of the proposed redevelopment, the main component of which was the construction of a basement car park, with associated ramp and lift, and piled foundations. The site lay in an area of limited archaeological potential for the post-medieval period, with possible Roman potential. This included pits and ditches of 17th century date, and foundations and other features associated with early 19th century buildings. The report concluded that the currently proposed works would truncate all archaeological deposits within the footprint of the basement car park and of the piles. Whether groundworks associated with the non-basemented areas and ground beams for the piles would truncate potential archaeological remains depended on the level to which they might have survived. This was unknown. If it was similar to that on an adjacent site these works would not effect archaeological deposits. It was recommended that the extent and nature of potential archaeological deposits be determined by undertaking an archaeological field evaluation, which might be combined with the observation of engineering or geotechnical test pits.
