Abstract: |
The archaeological monitoring undertaken at Blamsters Hall Farm uncovered little evidence of significant archaeological deposits nor did it retrieve any diagnostic material indicative of occupation. This paucity may, in part, have been due to the extensive reuse and redevelopment the farm had seen over the past two-three hundred years, which would have accounted for the destruction of more ephemeral surface deposits in the areas of the historic buildings and central area of the site. However, organic waterlogged material was uncovered immediately below the demolished Victorian farm buildings, while similar material was recorded at a greater depth in two of the building footprints. These deposits in conjunction with the presence of sand along the higher roadside and less permeable boulder clay spread across the remainder of the site, suggested that the farm historically suffered from poor drainage. Furthermore, it was possible that this material may have been associated with former ponds, similar to that which still remained to the south of the hall. The underpinning work within the aisled barn and ground reduction in the granary mainly revealed 19th century repair work to the frames and dwarf walls. An independent building survey revealed that the aisled barn and granary were broadly contemporary, both dating to the late 16th century, and that the granary was not originally built for farm storage, but as a domestic building, used to accommodate farm workers.
